If the time is four o'clock five minutes, we will say in English that "It's five minutes past four.

If the time is four o' clock ten minutes , we will say in English that "It's ten minutes past four.

If the time is four o' clock nine minutes, we will say that "It's nine minutes past four.


If the time is four o' clock fifteen minutes that "It's quarter past four.

If the time is four o' clock sixteen minutes that "It's sixteen minutes past four.


If the time is four o' clock twenty that "It's twenty minutes past four.

If the time is four o' clock twenty-five that "It's twenty-five minutes past four.

If the time is four o' clock twenty-nine that " It's twenty-minutes past four.

If the time is four o' clock thirty that "It's half past four.

  For more than half an hour, use the word ‘to’ before the next hour.

If there are twenty-five minutes left in five o'clock, we will say it in English that "It's twenty-five minutes to five.


If there are twenty minutes left in five o'clock, we will say it in English that "It's twenty minutes to five.


If there are fifteen minutes left in five o'clock, we will say it in English that "It's quarter to five.


If there are ten minutes left in five o'clock, we will say it in English that "It's ten minutes to five.

If the time is five o'clock, we will say it in English that "It's five o' clock.

A 12-hour clock divides the day into two 12-hour segments. One lasts from midnight till noon and the second half lasts from noon until midnight.

If we use a 24-hour clock to tell time in English, there is no need to use 'am' and 'pm'.


If we exceed 12 noon the time does not return to 1, but instead passes to 13, which is usually written with an 'h' after the number, for example 13h.

We used to say the word 'minutes' after ten o'clock if not five times. For example, we could say '17 minutes past 5' and '23 minutes before.
